Worship Services
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hawkins UMC has worship services at 10:00 a.m. Sunday mornings. We enjoy a traditional worship service every
Sunday morning, and we enjoy a Praise service normally held on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Holy Communion is normally held the first Sunday of
each month.
Sunday School
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's a Place for You in one of Hawkins' Sunday School classes. Classes meet at 8:45 a.m. before the
10:00 a.m. worship service.
o Grades K-3
This class meets in the "Go Tell It On the Mountain" room located in the Promise Land, which is on the 2nd floor of the Educational Building. The
purpose of the class is to help children develop a personal relationship with Jesus. The children learn by doing and experiencing the lesson.
This class has been studying the life of Jesus. In the past three months they have cooked and served a meal for the homeless, sent four boxes around
the world to children for Christmas, and sent cards and gifts to our church members in the military. Before the Bible story time, this class may play
games, sing or celebrate birthdays. The children enjoy watching Bible videos in the movie theater located in the Promise Land. Prayer is an
important part of the class, and any child is welcome to come and check us out! Teachers are Lin Cheslek and Cathie Newton.
o Grades 4-6: On the Road
This class is On the Road to learning about Bible truths and how we actually practice these truths every day. They are On the Road because last
summer the kids designed the classroom complete with a road, street signs and they have an area for the kids to sit in that consists of seats
out of cars.
This class is high energy and hands on. It meets in room 207. The class has been studying how God is real in our world, and they
will work on a special service project in January of 2008. The teacher is Julie Townley.
o Youth (Grades 7-12)
Jack Killgore is the instructor for the junior high and senior high school class. They meet in the youth room in the Fellowship Hall.
o Young Adults: Breakfast Club
This class meets in the library of the Abundant Life Center and consists of singles, married couples, divorced, members with kids, no kids,
ages 20's to 30's. It is really a mix of people in the early to mid stages of their careers. This group is serious in their studies yet laid
back in their structure. They are currently studying the Bible Genesis through Revelation.
This class supports one another in the thrills and trials of daily life. Monthly social activities are planned. Community service opportunities
are often considered. The level of participation is entirely up to the individual. It is hoped that you will prayerfully consider the invitation
to join this class. They would love to include you! Leaders are Jennifer Tate and Michelle Moore.
o Adult: Common Grounds
This class fills a need for an in between adult class. It meets in the conference room and consists of an age group loosely ranging from 30-60 years old.
Most members have kids 6-25 years old. The class may have 3 one Sunday and 8 on another. They seldom have the same group.
The class is currently working through a video series set in the Holy Land called "That the World May Know." The leader reads a Bible passage
and then you are there and he explains why it is important to the lesson and then tells how it still has relevance to our lives today. Teachers are
Becky Young and Brian Sykes.
o Adult: New Covenant Seekers
This class meets in the Abundant Life Center in room A-11 and welcomes adults of any age, male and female. Many members have
adult children and some have grandchildren but the class enjoys a mixture of ages and stages.
This class studies Bible-based literature (as opposed to social issues) that varies with the liturgical season, and they select new studies
approximately every quarter or church season. They will do an Advent study and a study during Lent. They like to do some service to church
and community. The leaders are Susan Athow and Cathie Newton.
o Cornerstone (Women)
This class meets in the Abundant Life Center in room A-11 and is studying "Jesus in Blue Jeans: A Practical Guide to Everyday Life."
o Crusaders
This class is perhaps the oldest Sunday School class at Hawkins Church, both in seniority and in age of members. This was one of the original
classes when the Church was organized in 1951. The youngest member is 71 years old and the eldest member is 99 years old. This class has had
many temporary homes, but their current location in the Abundant Life Center is their first permanent home. Over the years this class
has met in the Little Farm House, in the Preacher's Living Room (the Parsonage was behind the Church at that time), and in a corner of the old
Sanctuary. At some point they claimed the Conference Room and met there for many years. When the ALC was completed they were assigned and were
agreeable to moving to this permanent home of room A10.
This class has several leaders and they use the quarterly system where one person teaches each quarter. There is another person that teaches
the First Sunday, thus there are five leaders: Oren and Betty Baileess, Harriet Sims, Sam Price and Brook Simpson. The class swaps out among
themselves when someone is out.
o Adult: Becomers
This adult class meets in the Abundant Life Center in room A13. It is the largest class at Hawkins, averaging about 26 or 27 people each Sunday.
The class is currently studying the Adult Bible Studies series. There are five leaders that rotate each week of the month: Pete Phifer,
Tommy Miller, Diane Gibson, Burkett Martin and Newell Murphy. Cheryl Lloyd teaches the 5th Sunday when they occur. A large portion of this class has been
together for 30 or more years, so members know one another well.
From the weekly offering this class provides contributions to the Good Shepherd Community Center, the debt reduction, the preparation
of the Monday "feeding the homeless," and to other activities as the need arises. For the "old timers," this class is likely the most involved
in all church activities.
